Why business is leaving BBBEE cash on the table.
With youth unemployment in South Africa sitting at an unmanageable high level, both the public and private sector have reason to feel uncomfortable. The youth accounts for 36.2% of a population sitting at 55.6m people. According to Statistics South Africa the majority of young South Africans are unemployed, with around 5m unable to find jobs.
While students and recent graduates rage against the high university fees and complain about the lack of job opportunties, employers gripe that they simply cannot find skilled candidates to fill positions at every level of business.
Some onlookers argue, however, that there are already the beginnings of a solution in place for this conundrum in the form of the BBBEE scorecard – which have extensive skills development requirements.
