What is a Learning Experience Platform (LXP) and can it replace your LMS?
An LXP is a learning platform designed to provide a personalised, social, in-workflow learning experience that goes beyond the traditional LMS.
First popularized by leading industry analyst Josh Bersin, a Learning Experience Platform (LXP) promises to be the next big thing in corporate upskilling, attempting to create a ‘Netflix-like’ learning environment, where employees can interact with relevant content, receive social media support, and intelligent recommendations at push of a button.
At first glance, a Learning Experience Platform can sound similar to a traditional LMS. Both are used to disseminate learning programmes, both provide options to track progress and certifications/achievements, and both fall roughly within the same ambit of driving new skills. A Learning Experience Platform (LXP), however, focusses on the learner and supporting their performance, where the focus of the traditional LMS is on the reporting needs of the administrator. LXP content is succinct, easy to digest and delivered at any time to any device. No pop-ups, no plugins, no fuss - it looks and feels like the modern web.
In 2019, we have seen a number of endorsements for the LXP:
In Don Taylor’s L&D Global Sentiment Survey, Learning Experience Platforms are a new entry near the top of the predicted trends.
Deloitte’s 2019 Global Human Capital Trends Report describe the LXP as “the latest and possibly most pervasive trend in the area of learning technology... a much-needed evolution from today’s traditional learning management systems (LMSs)... the LXP becomes not just a tool for how people learn at work, but a solution for how people learn in life”.
New learningCloud Features
With its latest features release, the Netex learningCloud platform is set to take the Learning Experience Platform (LXP) market by storm. learningCloud’s new feature range supports:
- Instant communication with colleagues who face the same learning challenges.
- Manager tools to share relevant knowledge with their teams.
- Powerful analytics to enable L&D teams to respond to the changing environment.
Instant Messenger
The Instant Messenger is a great way for learners, managers, team leaders and subject-matter experts to connect. Learners and managers can chat with one or many of their team at the same time from any device or location.
Playlists
Playlists allows relevant and current content discovered during the flow of work to be quickly disseminated to your learning community. This allows you to harness the internal subject matter expertise of your organisation and create real learning communities.
Data Dashboards
learningCloud’s integration with PowerBi gives data-driven insights that map learning results to business goals. Managers can monitor learner engagement and performance in real-time and respond to the learning needs of their teams as they happen to make an instant, positive impact.
Learning in 2019 will be about agility. The agility of self-directed learners to understand their own needs and proactively seek out support. The agility of the organisation to respond quickly to these emerging needs. Agile learning and development professionals who can deliver the learning opportunities organisations need, will be in high demand.
