Education and employment go hand in hand
As the class of 2017 prepares to enter the workforce after 12-years of schooling, more emphasis should be placed on on-the-job training as a valuable, alternative post-matric study option.
Since South Africa’s unemployment rate is the highest it’s been in 14-years, Richard Rayne, CEO of iLearn – a leading corporate learning solutions provider, says matrics are encouraged to think of alternative study options to increase their chances of entering the job market. Rayne says skills development through Learnerships is one way of doing this, and is guaranteed to make a positive contribution to the country’s economy since it upskills individuals in areas of national significance.
A Learnership is a vocational and educational programme that links structured learning and work experience in order to obtain a registered qualification. It combines theory and workplace practice into a qualification registered by the National Qualifications Framework (NQF).
“With unemployment at an all-time high, we need to start thinking out-of-the-box, and skills development in scarce skills areas specifically is one way of empowering millennials to obtain a qualification and make a difference,” Rayne says.
How on-the-job training will benefit the learner:
- An opportunity to enter the job market and appeal to current and future employers
- A fixed-term employment contract and generous allowance for the duration of the programme
- A nationally-recognised qualification.
Rayne says iLearn works with forward-thinking companies to deliver Learnership qualifications, as well as instructor-led and online short courses (a “highly recommended option for millennials”) that youngsters can embark on after matric to further their education. Similarly, he says companies can also use them to help upskill their employees and grow their business.
“Digital learning is especially important for the age we live in and has become the preferred way for people, and millennials especially, to communicate and learn all over the world. It places the learner at the centre of the learning process,” he says. Rayne says iLearn is committed to empowering people to empower others.
“Our country is crying out to the Millennial generation to develop the skills that trade and industry need right now to move South Africa forward,” he says.
